Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and New York City Councilmember Margaret Chin have been observing what's going on in the South Street Seaport and they don't like it. On Aug. 19, they wrote a letter to Alicia Glen, the city's deputy mayor for Housing and Urban Development, to protest The Howard Hughes Corporation's appropriation of public space in the Seaport and its exclusion of the South Street Seaport Museum from what it has been branding as the Seaport's "Culture District."

The Sciame building at 80 South St. was acquired by The Howard Hughes Corporation along with some neighboring property and was flipped after a few weeks for a 110 percent profit.

If the Commissioners at the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission are truly looking for a reason to protect views of the Brooklyn Bridge from areas within the South Street Seaport Historic District, please take note that the Brooklyn Bridge is highlighted in the Designation Report for the South Street Seaport Historic District Extension (1989), and is specifically mentioned in relation to the District:

Update: Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) Public Hearing Postponed to August 4, 2015
Save Our Seaport met Wednesday evening for an orientation to the coming Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) public hearing on applications by the Howard Hughes Corporation for the South Street Seaport Historic District.
The first thing learned was that the hearing is now postponed to Tuesday, August 4. The hearing will be held in the Commission’s offices in the Municipal Building, 1 Centre Street, 9th floor. The time has not yet been determined but we understand that it will be last on the agenda.
